These are just some of the physiological benefits of cycling travel. But many people don't know that cycling is one of the ways to improve mental health.

A healthy person should cycle for 30 to 60 minutes every day. I know we love it when we get outside and ride our bikes. But why? As you peddle the bicycle, the heart pumps in the blood flows. Anandamide is naturally present in our body. Naam contains levels of a fatty acid neurotransmitter that carries nerve impulses between nerves or muscles or glands is part of our endocannabinoid system. Cycling increases the number of endorphins in our brain, which helps to improve our mood and we feel good 

 In a 2019 study published in the International Journal of Transportation Research, Researchers found in Association of positive mood and psychosocial benefits with habitual bicycle use. The researchers surveyed 1131 residents of the Brisbane area of Australia. Where researchers attempt to measure residents' socio-economic characteristics and travel habits, self-actualization and self-perceptions of the relationship between cycling and mood. This study found that bicycle use has a positive relationship between physical, psychological, social, self-efficacy levels, and positive mood, all of which materialize. Those who cycle regularly have more positive self-concept. Physical, psychological, social self-efficacy levels are very high.   

Benefits of cycling


Cycling not only keeps us physically and mentally healthy, our environment is also healthy, i.e. cycling does not pollute the environment. For this reason, the use of bicycles from motorized vehicles has the potential to provide benefits from climate, health and environmental perspectives. If we consider cycling as a mode of transportation, traffic jams will be reduced to a large extent. The researchers therefore recommend to the government's that the government should invest more in cycling infrastructure to protect the safety of cyclists and encourage people to choose cycling over motorized vehicles.

Our brain is like a muscle. Like any other muscle, it can be strengthened through exercise. When we cycle, the neurons in the brain regenerate and their ability to form new connections, become stronger. And it also increases the production of proteins needed to make new brain cells. That's why compared to a sedentary person, a cyclist’s brain is up to three times more active. Some studies have even shown that cycling slows the aging process by up to 5 years.

A 2015 Study from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy found that cycling could help reduce CO2 emissions from urban passenger transport by 11% by 2050, and save 24 trillion dollars globally.   

Relief anxiety, depression and increase self-esteem 

 Cycling increases the levels of serotonin and dopamine in our brain, both neurotransmitters that play an important role in coping with stress.

Scientific studies have shown that if a person cycles regularly, he is actually doubling the production of brain cells, that is, when we cycle, our brain increases the production of protein. This protein helps create new brain cells, which in turn helps in brain development.   

Cycling helps a lot in improving our mental health. Not just cycling, all aerobic exercise is good for the brain as it helps maintain blood flow to our body without disrupting the supply of nutrients and oxygen. This is why it is often seen that people who exercise regularly have better judgment, learning and thinking skills as they age.

 By cycling, not only we humans are physically and mentally healthy, our environment is also healthy. That is, cycling does not cause any environmental pollution. Cycling is one of the modes of transportation which does not rely on fossil fuels and does not emit any greenhouse gases during its use. But if we look at the bicycle as a means of transportation, it can be time consuming.    

1.  Is 30 minutes of cycling a day enough 

 If you are clear about the purpose of your cycling, it is very easy to know how much time you will cycle in a day. If you cycle to be physically active, 30 minutes of cycling a day is sufficient. And if you are cycling for a competitive right then you need to cycle for 5 to 6 hours a day. A novice cyclist or those who are new to cycling should never cycle for 5 to 6 hours a day to participate in competitive rights. 30 minutes on the first day, 40 minutes on the second day. Gradually increase the cycling time. Otherwise, your body may be harmed   

2. Is biking Good for mental health 

 We all know that if our physical health is good, then our mental health is also good. i.e. “A healthy body, a healthy mind.  

 Cycling is a beneficial exercise not only for physical health but also for mental health. Cycling can lower your body's levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and cycling can be much cheaper in the long run than a gym membership.   

3. Does cycling burn belly fat?   

Yes, cycling is a suitable and cheap workout to lose belly fat, but it is time consuming. Cycling helps in overall fat loss and weight control. Cycling burns more calories in a shorter period of time and affects basal metabolic rate, and greater mass. Peddling a bicycle strengthens the leg muscles.    

4. What are the negative effects of exceling on your body?  

 While cycling improves our physical and mental health and is environmentally friendly, it also has some disadvantages.  

I) Cycling can cause lower and upper back pain due to improper bike setup and improper riding posture.  

II) Cycling is non weight bearing exercise, thereby reducing our bone density. Bone density refers to the amount of bone mineral per square centimeter, which indicates bone strength and health.   

III)  Cycling puts a lot of physical effort on us and affects the blood flow. Due to which cycling can increase the stress on our heart and headaches  

IV)  it is a time-consuming mode of transport.  

 5. How does cycling affect mental health?  

 Endorphin hormone is released when cycling. Which relaxes our mind and helps us feel happy. As a result, our mood is good and the feeling of anxiety is reduced. Cycling gives us a sense of Peace of Mind.
